Eye protection is essentially protective gear specifically designed for the eyes, normally face shield, designed in order to minimize the danger of injury from near-by objects. Among the many hazards requiring eye protection are: impact from debris or particles, radiation or light, wind burst, heat or other object used in sports and even from any kind of ball or puck thrown at your eyes. Thus, you should wear it when playing games and even driving, such as tennis, cricket, football, basketball etc. In fact, one can experience minor injuries every minute. The following are some of the common injuries that may occur due to improper eye protection:
o Glaucoma: It is the worst form of blindness and leads to permanent damage to vision. This condition occurs when a tumor is built up inside the eye and causes pressure on the eyeball, eventually leading to tears and eventually blindness. This condition is extremely dangerous and even leads to death. It is basically caused by improper management of pressure within the eye, caused by either protrusion on the eyeball or abnormal growth on the eyeball wall.
o Accidental Eye Injury: Accidental eye injury also occurs due to improper eye protection. Often when playing ball games, players tend to make funny faces or gesture while trying to catch a ball, which often throws-up dust, small pebbles or other dirt into their eyes. Such act often results in accidental eye injury. However, it can be easily prevented with the help of proper eyewear such as sunglasses. However, if this is not possible because of the cost, one should try to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight.
o Heat and Cold: Due to climate change and shifting weather conditions, we need to use suitable eye protective equipment such as sunglasses, goggles and snow caps. If you are frequently outdoors, such as at the beach, then you should also wear a hat, scarf and gloves to protect your hands and face. The same holds true for those who spend a lot of time sitting behind computer monitors, working at a computer, etc. A good eye care maintenance program would help you prevent the occurrence of any eye problems, such as eye protection. This program consists of cleaning the lenses of the eyes on a regular basis, using suitable lenses, avoiding unnecessary or prolonged exposure to UV rays and wearing appropriate glasses and contacts.
o Glaucoma: glaucoma is a condition where fluid starts to build in the eye, making vision blurry and causing pain. This is usually caused by excess stress placed on the eye muscles or in rare cases due to abnormal drainage of the eye. Eye doctors perform an examination to determine the exact cause of the disease. The most common treatment used is LASIK eye surgery. LASIK eye surgery corrects vision by reshaping the cornea by cutting a microscopic flap. It does not eliminate the disease but improves vision.
In some cases, eye disease may be related to other medical conditions such as diabetes, cancer, etc. The best thing to do in such a case is to consult an eye doctor who would be able to prescribe an appropriate treatment. A good eye care maintenance program can help prevent the occurrence of any eye problem like cataract or any other serious eye disease. Prevention is always better than cure.
